Remote Ocean Sensing System WERA
The German company HELZEL Messtechnik GmbH is one of the world leading manufacturers of oceanographic and environmental measurement systems. Apart from measurement systems the company provides high-quality signal processing, signal sources, high frequency amplifiers and well known all around the world the Remote Ocean Sensing System WERA.
The WERA ocean radar represents a modern high-tech remote sensing system used for monitoring of waves, ocean surface currents and wind direction by means of over the horizon radar technology. This shore based high resolution system of monitoring is engineered to operate with radio frequencies between 5 and 50 MHz. The signals detected by WERA can be received from long distances of more than 200 km.
The WERA radar is designed to provide information about wave height and direction as well as ocean currents with the maximum level of accuracy and exceptional temporal and spatial resolution for SAR, VTS and environmental protection applications. The WERA robust system provides the most reliable data even in case of very dynamic ocean currents and extreme weather conditions. The WERA radar operates in a frequency modulated continuous wave mode with transmission of a continuously swept rf-signal. Compared to the actual transmitted signal, the reflected signal has a frequency offset, that’s why the range is frequency encoded.
The WERA system transmits very low rf power with no pulsing or gating sequences. Separate locations for Tx and Rx antennae help to achieve the required de-coupling between receiver and transmitter. Best signal to noise performance is provided by means of the extreme low noise FMcw transmission mode.
The WERA remote ocean sensing system can provide modern Coastal Management with all the information it may need. The system provides high temporal and spatial resolution measurements of waves (including waveheight and directional spectra up to 100 km with maps of significant wave height available for each grid point within half of the radar range), wind (with direction of up to 200 km) and currents (with distances more than 200 km, temporal resolution of 3 to 10 minutes and range resolution of 250 m).
The main spheres of application of the WERA radar are search and rescue operations (helps to reduce the search radius), science (helps to create current and wave maps), fishing industry (helps to optimize the operational area), port authorities (helps to improve vessel traffic services), meteorological offices (helps to get real-time data for weather predictions and early warnings about tsunami), environmental protection (helps to detect lost containers or oil spills), tourism (provides information for recreation and yachting) and construction (helps to plan off-shore installations of oil rigs and windfarms).
The HELZEL Messtechnik GmbH helps its customers to find the most optimal site for the WERA system and customize it according to the special needs and requests. The company offers the installation of hardware, complete support of the site configuration and remote maintenance services.
The WERA remote ocean sensing system proved to supply real-time measurements of much higher quality compared to any other modern measurement techniques, and that’s why it represents one of the best and most popular ocean sensing systems available on the market.
